Team Selfridge treats American House veterans to practice day for the air show | Macomb Daily

Beverly Sue Mankowski was pleased when American House told her she would be one of 19 Michigan veterans invited to a special event Friday at Selfridge Air National Guard base in Harrison Township.

She served in the United States Air Force, so visiting a local air base was always something she enjoyed.

But it’s more than an everyday excursion.

She has been interviewed about her life as an Airman 2nd Class during the Korean War and has since learned that she and her guests are being treated to a preview performance of the U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command F-22 Demonstration Team. It’s one of several teams performing at the 2022 Selfridge Open House and Air Show being hosted by the Michigan National Guard’s 127th Wing from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The free event on the base is open to the public and will feature numerous aerial acts and static displays highlighting the U.S. military.

As for the air show?

Mankowski cannot wait to see the jets take off from Selfridge Field, just as they did during the first flight on July 8, 1917.

“I went to the air shows in England,” Mankowski said. “I took my daughter, Heidi, to a show when she was a year old. She was so happy.”

She had on a little bonnet and I wore a scarf like Jackie Kennedy because it was a really windy day,” added Monkowski, who will be attending the air show practice day along with 18 other service members living in the Detroit area. Friday’s event will be a treat for the veterans but also an opportunity for other guests to speak with local veterans about their own military experience, the experience of seeing the air show and what this event means to local veterans.

“We are proud to be a sponsor of this year’s Selfridge Open House and Air Show and to give our veteran residents the opportunity to preview this incredible experience and celebrate their bravery,” said Dale Watchowski, president and CEO of American House Senior Living Communities. “At American House, we express our deep gratitude and sincere appreciation to our veterans for their brave and selfless service to our country. We thank them for answering the call of duty, their gallant courage, and the extraordinary sacrifices they and their families have made on our behalf in the name of freedom, liberty and peace.”
