At American House, we offer a maintenance-free lifestyle with a variety of activities and events designed to promote longevity. We believe a healthy combination of social interaction, nutritious foods, stimulating programming and physical activity every day is necessary to healthy aging. With our focus on living well, you can strive to live longer with the continuous care and support of our dedicated team.
A Harvard medical study confirms what we see in our communities every day: while genetics and longevity are connected, up to 80% of lifespan is shaped by lifestyle. That’s why we’ve built our communities around the everyday practices that support healthier, longer lives.
Eat a healthy, mostly plant-based diet
Nutritious foods support your cells, immune system, and overall function. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and healthy fats can help you live longer and feel better. Our chef-prepared meals offer a well-rounded, healthy diet. Best of all, enjoyed in our dining room, they provide a great opportunity to socialize with friends.
Stay physically active
Regular movement improves heart health, muscle strength, balance, and mental well-being. Just 150 minutes of moderate activity a week can significantly extend your life. At American House we design fitness programs for every ability level, including water aerobics, chair yoga and daily walks.
Avoid smoking
Smoking shortens lifespans and damages nearly every organ in the body. Quitting—or never starting—greatly reduces your risk of cancer, heart disease, and lung issues.
Limit alcohol
Excessive drinking raises your risk of liver damage, cancer, and accidents. Drinking less—or not at all—is one of the most effective ways to protect your long-term health.
Get enough sleep
Sleeping 7–9 hours a night supports your brain, immune system, and emotional well-being. Poor sleep over time is linked to chronic illness and decreased longevity.
Stay hydrated
Proper hydration helps your body function efficiently and may reduce your risk for chronic disease. Staying hydrated is associated with longer life and better health.
Stay socially connected
Regular social interaction helps reduce stress and promotes emotional resilience and longevity. In short, people who stay socially active tend to live longer and healthier lives. We provide a robust life enrichment program that includes engaging, interesting activities, festive events and social-based brain training workouts that help boost daily thinking, improve mental acuity and build confidence.
Think positively
Optimism and a positive mindset are linked to better emotional health and longer lifespan. A hopeful outlook can boost your ability to cope and thrive as you age.
